Shoulder Pain That Won't Quit? You're Not Alone.

Rotator cuff pain, frozen shoulder, and impingement don't just hurt — they steal your strength, your sleep, and your ability to do the things you love. And generic treatment that ignores the real cause only makes it worse.

You've Tried to Push Through It

Stretching, resting, icing — nothing seems to stick. The pain keeps coming back because the root cause has never been addressed, just masked.

Generic PT Hasn't Worked

You've been handed a sheet of exercises and left to figure it out alone. Cookie-cutter care doesn't work for complex shoulder injuries — your body deserves better.

You're Worried It's Getting Worse

Every missed workout, every night of broken sleep, every time you can't reach overhead — shoulder pain compounds. Waiting longer rarely makes it better.

Real Results

"Andy is an exceptionally skilled diagnostician and took a proactive approach to my care even before surgery, designing safe, modified weight training that prepared my body and made a huge difference in my recovery. I truly believe that pre-op work is the reason I did so well post-op. His one-on-one approach to patient care allows him to find what drives and motivates his clients."

"Andy is AMAZING! I'm a runner and a few years ago I was having so much pain in my calf that I was barely able to walk much less run. I went to Andy and within a week my calf was feeling 75% better and by the end of 3 weeks I was running again! I have not had a problem with my calf since! Andy gave me an exercise and stretching program that I follow to this day. I've even actually won a few races in my age group!!! Andy is amazing."

"It is hard to put into writing how amazing this PT team is. It starts with the younger and talented Crystal who is the glue for AJ PT. Once onboarded the professionalism, knowledge, and caring atmosphere is truly warming. Andy was incredible, I began with a specific knee issue and after a few sessions I was feeling great. He is fun to talk to and has a great sense of humor which helps to make it a really enjoyable experience. I loved going to AJ PT, I could not recommend them more and look forward to going again in the near future."

"Andy Johnson is the best PT I've ever gone to by far! During my visits, he was totally focused on me and my injury. He was able to identify what was going on with my shoulder pain, treat it in the office, as well as give me the appropriate exercises to do at home. I was able to recover even quicker than i expected. I found Andy to be professional, highly knowledgeable, and committed to providing excellent service. If I ever have a PT need again, I would definitely see Andy!

Your Questions, Answered

Everything you need to know about getting started with shoulder pain physical therapy near you in Ooltewah.

Do I need a physician referral to start physical therapy?

No — Tennessee is a direct-access state, meaning you can schedule an appointment at AJ Physical Therapy & Performance without a referral from your doctor. You can call or book online and be seen quickly.

Do you accept insurance?

AJ Physical Therapy & Performance operates as a cash-based practice, which means we work directly with you — not insurance companies. This allows us to spend a full 60 minutes with you one-on-one, without the restrictions that come with insurance billing. We accept HSA and FSA payments, and we provide superbills upon request so you can seek out-of-network reimbursement from your insurer.

What should I expect during my first shoulder pain appointment?

Your first session is a comprehensive 60-minute evaluation. Dr. Andy or Jeremy will take a full history of your shoulder pain, perform a detailed movement and strength assessment, and begin discussing a personalized treatment plan — often starting hands-on treatment in that very first visit.

What techniques do you use to treat shoulder pain?

Depending on your diagnosis, your treatment plan may include manual therapy, joint mobilization, soft tissue mobilization, dry needling, IASTM/Graston technique, Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training, therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular re-education, and taping. Every approach is evidence-based and tailored to your specific condition.

How long does it take to recover from shoulder pain or a rotator cuff injury?

Recovery timelines vary based on the severity of your injury, how long you've had symptoms, and your activity goals. In your evaluation, we'll give you a realistic and honest timeline. Many patients begin noticing meaningful improvement within the first 3–4 sessions.
